Indonesia’s digital connectivity has now reached 90 percent of the total population. Moving forward, the government is focusing on improving the quality of service, particularly by accelerating the expansion and enhancement of 5G network infrastructure across the country.

Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, stated that achieving the 90 percent coverage mark is a significant milestone in national digital transformation. However, she emphasized that high coverage must be matched by internet speeds and connection stability that meet international standards.

“Our main challenge is no longer just about connecting regions, but how to ensure that the internet connection used by the public is fast, reliable, and affordable. Therefore, upgrading to 5G technology is a top priority,” said Meutya during a press conference in Jakarta.

According to data from the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, 5G deployment is currently still concentrated in major cities and industrial hubs. To address this disparity, the government plans to incentivize telecommunications operators to expand their 5G networks into secondary cities and rural areas.

In addition to expanding physical infrastructure, the government is also preparing a more efficient radio frequency spectrum allocation strategy to support the adoption of 5G technology. This step is expected to encourage investment in the telecommunications sector and accelerate digital economic growth in Indonesia.
