Bangkok Floodwaters Recede as Residents Begin Mud Cleanup

Aceh – Indonesia, Thai residents began clearing remaining mud and debris after floodwaters in Bangkok receded on Tuesday (Sep 29, 2026). Nevertheless, the impact of the disaster continues to paralyze several city activities, cause casualties, and trigger flight delay warnings from national airlines. Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported that around 700,000 people were affected. As of Tuesday, parts of the capital remained submerged. Schools were closed for a second consecutive day, while many residents were advised to continue working from home.

Intensive cleanup efforts began in eastern Bangkok, one of the hardest-hit areas.

Supreeya Kasim (25), a local restaurant worker, was busy sweeping away muddy water that flooded her workplace.

โ€œIt has never flooded up to my knees like this before. This is the worst one. All of our belongings are completely ruined,โ€ Supreeya told AFP.

Supreeya said the water on the street outside reached waist-height and was calf-deep indoors. The floodwaters only began to slowly recede on Monday (Sep 28, 2026) night.

Assisted by three staff members, she estimated that her restaurant would only be able to reopen on Thursday (Oct 1, 2026).

โ€œWe have to wait until it dries out, then spray liquids like alcohol or bleach; otherwise, mold will start to grow,โ€ she said.

The severe impact was also felt by residential communities, particularly along Bangkok’s canals. Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate to more than 230 shelters set up by authorities.

Supachai Pongchan (72), a resident living on the ground floor in Bang Kapi district, voiced both grief and disappointment over the government’s slow early warning system.

โ€œI am very sad because all my belongings are ruined. We didn’t have time to move things in time because the flood came at night,โ€ said Supachai, who managed to save only a few electrical appliances to higher ground.

โ€œThe government miscalculated. So, when the massive surge of water arrived, we really didn’t know what to do,โ€ he emphasized.

The major flooding in Bangkok is part of a wave of torrential rains affecting 29 out of Thailand’s 77 provinces. The severe weather’s impact also extended to neighboring Myanmar, claiming at least eight lives there.

Across Thailand, disaster mitigation authorities recorded 23 fatalities since mid-September. The death toll includes at least four in Bangkok, eight in Samut Prakanโ€”a coastal region between the capital and the seaโ€”and six in Sa Kaeo province in the east.

September is typically the peak of Thailand’s rainy season. However, this year’s impact felt far more destructive for Bangkok, a megacity built on former marshland supported by a network of canals.

All water pumping stations in Bangkok have been operated at full capacity, but authorities warned that draining all flooded areas will take up to a week.

Scientists also warned that the intensity and frequency of such extreme weather phenomena will continue to increase alongside accelerated global warming caused by fossil fuel emissions.

For locals, this disaster serves as a stark alarm regarding accelerating climate change. โ€œThis is a lesson,โ€ said Chaleerat Chamrasporn (55) while picking up trash from flooded waters in front of her home.
