Aceh – Indonesia, Banda Aceh (Waspada Aceh) – The role and voice of women in Acehnese journalism were thoroughly examined by a research team from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Syiah Kuala University (USK), led by the Dean of FISIP USK, Dr. Hamdani M. Syam.

The role of female journalists was explored through a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) themed around the participation and challenges faced by female journalists in the Land of Rencong, held on Tuesday (29/9/2026) in the VIP Room of Sada Coffee, Lambhuk, Banda Aceh.

This event was part of a specialized research project highlighting the journey of female journalists in Aceh Province. The forum brought together various stakeholders: female journalists, the Chair of AJI Aceh, the Chair of FJPI Aceh, media observers, Communication Studies students, and the entire research team.

“This forum serves as a valuable space to hear directly about the realities faced by female journalists in Aceh,” said Hamdani.

Meanwhile, the Chair of the Indonesian Female Journalists Forum (FJPI) Aceh, Saniah, emphasized the unique aspect alongside equality in carrying out duties. “In writing, women prioritize empathy. However, in the field, burdens and responsibilities do not discriminate based on gender—they are equally demanding for both women and men,” she revealed.

Saniah also expressed her hope that universities would be more proactive in nurturing future journalists. “Campuses need to provide dedicated journalism spaces taught directly by practitioners. This is crucial so that interest in becoming journalists continues to grow among students, ensuring the profession does not gradually fade away,” she added.

The discussion proceeded warmly and openly, beginning with first-hand experiences shared by female journalists who have navigated the coverage field. Various insights and questions emerged, enriching the real picture of the positions, roles, and obstacles experienced by female journalists in Aceh.

The outcomes of this FGD are expected to serve as a foundation for policy recommendations and the development of a more inclusive and equitable journalism education. (Tsara Swissi)
