NUKILAN.ID | BANDA ACEH – The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned the public about the potential for high waves in several sea areas across Aceh. Waves ranging from 2.5 to 4 meters high are projected to occur from September 26 to 29, 2026.

Areas potentially affected by these high waves include the waters of Sabang-Banda Aceh, Aceh Besar-Meulaboh, Southern Simeulue, and Aceh Singkil-Pulau Banyak.

This condition warrants caution from the public, particularly fishermen, vessel operators, and ferry passengers carrying out activities in these sea areas.

Meanwhile, moderate waves with heights between 1.25 and 2.5 meters have the potential to occur in the waters from Southwest Aceh to Simeulue. This condition still requires attention, especially for small vessels.

BMKG explained that atmospheric conditions around Aceh currently favor rain cloud formation. Spatial activity from Equatorial Rossby Waves and the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) in Aceh, along with wind shear and convergence zones, could enhance convective activity.

Warm sea surface temperatures in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra and the eastern waters of Aceh are also contributing factors. These conditions can increase evaporation and atmospheric moisture content, thereby supporting the growth of rain clouds.

Regarding wind patterns, BMKG recorded that winds across Aceh waters generally blow from the Southeast to the Southwest at speeds ranging from 3 to 25 knots.

The highest wind speeds were observed in the waters of Sabang-Banda Aceh, Aceh Besar-Meulaboh, and Southern Simeulue.

The combination of these wind conditions and atmospheric dynamics could impact maritime activities. High waves pose an increased risk, especially for smaller vessels operating in open waters.

BMKG urges fishermen, ferry service providers, and vessel operators to heighten their vigilance and continuously monitor weather and wave updates throughout the warning period.

Members of the public planning to use sea transportation are also advised to follow safety instructions from officers and shipping operators, as well as to consider wave conditions, wind speeds, and weather updates before traveling.
