Aceh – Indonesia, South Korea’s elderly population has now reached 21.6 percent of the country’s total population amid an accelerating demographic aging process, as reported by Xinhua via Antara. These findings were revealed in data released by South Korea’s Ministry of Data and Statistics on Thursday (1/10/2026).
The number of people aged 65 and older reached 11.125 million in 2026, accounting for 21.6 percent of the nation’s total population, according to the ministry.
South Korea officially became a super-aged society last year after the proportion of elderly citizens reached 20.3 percent, crossing the 20 percent threshold.
Since then, the country’s population aging trend has continued to accelerate. The ministry projects that the elderly population will surpass 30 percent of the total population by 2036 and 40 percent by 2050.
The elderly dependency ratioβthe ratio of the elderly population to the working-age population aged 15β64βis projected to surge from 31.3 in 2026 to 50.1 in 2036, and reach 100.8 by 2066.
The number of households headed by elderly individuals accounts for 28.8 percent of all households in the country. Among these elderly-headed households, single-person households comprise the largest share at 38.0 percent, followed by couple-only households at 35.1 percent. The number of elderly-headed households is expected to exceed 10 million by 2038, with their proportion relative to all households projected to surpass 50 percent by 2052.
