Aceh – Indonesia, The North Sumatra Provincial Government is developing 9,624 hectares of garlic cultivation across nine regencies to strengthen the agricultural sector and enhance food self-sufficiency.

This initiative aims to boost productivity, empower farmers, and guarantee market certainty for harvested yields.

This was delivered by North Sumatra Vice Governor Surya during the Coordination Meeting for the Implementation of 2026 Garlic Activities and 2027 Preparations with the Directorate General of Horticulture of the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, held in Meeting Room I, Floor 2, North Sumatra Governor’s Office, Jalan Pangeran Diponegoro No. 30, Medan, Wednesday (7/10/2026).

Surya stated that North Sumatra possesses excellent agroclimatic potential for garlic development. Out of the total 9,624 hectares targeted for development, the area is distributed across Samosir Regency (5,001 hectares), Karo (2,995 hectares), Humbang Hasundutan (411 hectares), Simalungun (384 hectares), Dairi (288 hectares), Toba (234 hectares), North Tapanuli (198 hectares), Deli Serdang (73 hectares), and Mandailing Natal (40 hectares).

To achieve maximum results, he emphasized that the supply of high-quality seeds must be fully secured. Additionally, production must have guaranteed off-takers and market certainty, alongside strengthening the capacity of seed breeders and farmer groups.

“Therefore, we must push productivity to reach the target of 20 tons per hectare of wet yield,” he said.

To realize this target, Surya added, the North Sumatra Provincial Government continues to encourage and monitor sustainable garlic development. The provincial government aims for production growth to align with market certainty, ensuring business security and profitable prices for farmers.

“Hence, I hope coordination between the North Sumatra Provincial Government, regency administrations, and the Ministry of Agriculture grows stronger, allowing garlic development in North Sumatra to proceed in a targeted, sustainable manner while delivering tangible benefits to farmers,” he expressed.

Director General of Horticulture at the Ministry of Agriculture, Muhammad Taufiq Ratule, stated that North Sumatra is part of the national strategic horticulture development area designed to achieve garlic self-sufficiency. He noted that North Sumatra is assessed to have superior agroclimatic conditions and immense potential for garlic cultivation.

“The development of garlic aims to strengthen local supply and production. North Sumatra serves as a core garlic development hub to support national food self-sufficiency,” he concluded. (Edi)
