Scrap Dealers: The Lifelines for Crystal Meth Addicts

Aceh – Indonesia, THE THEFT of iron components from the suspension bridge connecting Gampong Lamseupeung and Lambhuk in Banda Aceh should not be treated as a routine crime. This is a serious indicator of deep-rooted social problems in Banda Aceh and its surrounding areas.

This is an organized crime. It all stems from rogue scrap metal dealers, locally known as botot. They serve as the primary supporters of iron theft in numerous locations, not just in Banda Aceh.

These rogue receivers are willing to purchase everything from iron manhole covers to telecommunications poles. By offering cash for these items, they enable this practice to thrive. Without them, the stolen iron would be worthless.

Their primary suppliers are crystal meth addicts. These receivers accept almost any stolen goods brought in by addicts, providing them with money that is spent not on food, but to buy more meth.

Even in urban areas like Banda Aceh, perpetrators do not hesitate to strike in broad daylight. All of this leads to infrastructure damage that threatens public safety, such as when bridge iron is stolen.

For this reason, the Banda Aceh City Government and the Aceh Besar Regency Government must collaborate to crack down on rogue scrap dealers. This includes ensuring that scrap collectors are selective and refuse to purchase items originating from public facilities.

Both local governments must be bold enough to make this legal breakthrough. By cutting off these collectors at the source, this crime will cease. Among addicts, scrap dealers are seen as savior-like figures, ready to give them quick cash to sustain their meth habit.***
