5 Reasons Why Eyeglasses Can Cause Dizziness and Eye Discomfort

Aceh – Indonesia, Eyeglasses are designed to clarify vision. However, for some people, wearing glasses can actually trigger complaints such as headaches, dizziness, eyestrain, and blurred vision.

These complaints are quite common, especially when transitioning to a new lens prescription. The eyes require time to adjust to changes in the lens strength.

Beyond the adaptation process, discomfort can also stem from poorly fitted frames or an incorrect lens prescription that fails to meet your visual needs.

So, what causes glasses to make you dizzy?

  1. Adapting to a New Prescription

When you wear glasses for the first time or switch to a significantly different prescription, your eyes must adapt to the new lens power.

This process can strain the eyes and trigger headaches.

According to Medical News Today, the adjustment period can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks.

During this period, wearers may also experience eyestrain, blurred vision, or image distortion.

  1. Wearing Bifocal, Trifocal, or Progressive Lenses

Bifocal, trifocal, and progressive lenses feature sections with different powers to assist vision at varying distances.

New wearers must train themselves to look through the correct section of the lens. This adaptation process can cause complaints like headaches, dizziness, or nausea.

  1. Frame Is Too Tight or Too Loose

Apart from the lenses, spectacle frames can also cause discomfort. Frames that are too tight apply pressure to the nose, temples, or behind the ears. Conversely, frames that are too loose can slip down easily.

The distance between the frame and the eyes also matters. A position that is too close or too far can cause discomfort for the wearer.

If the frames feel pressing or leave marks on your nose, they can be adjusted for a more comfortable fit.

  1. Incorrect Lens Prescription

Lens power that is too high or too low forces the eyes to work harder. This condition can trigger headaches.

Besides lens power, the interpupillary distance (IPD) must also be measured accurately. An improper measurement can strain the eyes.

Uncorrected refractive errors can also cause headaches, including pain around the eyes or the front of the head.

  1. Glasses Do Not Suit the Activity

A single pair of glasses may not be suitable for all activities. Glasses designed for distance vision or reading, for instance, are not necessarily ideal for prolonged computer work.

If your glasses do not match your visual requirements during specific tasks, you may experience discomfort and headaches.

If issues arise after wearing a new prescription, your eyes might simply still be in the adjustment phase.

Healthline recommends that users refrain from switching frequently between old and new glasses, as this can prolong the adaptation process.

When needed, you can take off your glasses and rest your eyes for about 15 minutes. A cold compress can also be used to help soothe the eyes.

For computer users, lenses with an anti-reflective coating can help reduce screen glare. Meanwhile, tight or ill-fitting frames can be readjusted.

When Should Glasses-Induced Dizziness Be Examined?

Headaches, dizziness, or nausea occurring after wearing new glasses are generally linked to the adaptation process.

However, persistent complaints warrant attention. If headaches, dizziness, or nausea persist after about a week of wearing new glasses, you are advised to consult an eye care professional promptly.

An examination is also necessary if headaches occur frequently or continuously whenever you wear your glasses. An evaluation can help determine whether the lens prescription needs adjustment or the frame requires fitting.

If symptoms persist, a comprehensive eye exam can pinpoint the cause and determine the necessary adjustments.
