Aceh – Indonesia, General Police Suyudi Ario Seto was officially inaugurated as the National Police Chief (Kapolri) by President Prabowo Subianto on Thursday (1/10/2026).
As Kapolri, one of his main initiatives is the “Police with the Community” program, which places the public at the center of policing operations.
Suyudi Will Not Overhaul Listyo Sigit’s Policies. In addition to introducing new programs, Suyudi stated that he would not completely overhaul the policies established during Listyo Sigit’s leadership.
According to Suyudi, a change in police leadership does not necessitate a total policy shift. He chooses to maintain existing achievements while identifying areas that still require improvement.
βI want to continue the authority and courage to clearly see the institution’s shortcomings, while maintaining and expanding the achievements that have been built recently,β Suyudi said.
Suyudi also highlighted the reinforcement of President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita agenda as one of the policies to be continued, noting that several of its initiatives directly align with police duties.
Suyudi linked the police’s mandate to key Asta Cita priorities, including political, legal, and bureaucratic reform, the eradication of corruption and narcotics, the strengthening of national security, and human resource development.
According to Suyudi, these agendas are closely tied to policing functions. However, he emphasized that the division of authority among agencies must be preserved.
βThe role of the police is to maintain a safe space for development, provide legal certainty, protect the public, prevent disruptions, and enforce the law against criminal acts in accordance with our mandate,β Suyudi stated.
This statement relates to provisions in Law Number 5 of 2026 concerning the Third Amendment to Law Number 2 of 2002 on the Indonesian National Police.
The law was enacted and took effect on June 17, 2026. Among the key regulations are the clarification of the Kapolri’s authority and the expansion of police duties, including combating cybercrime.
Law Number 5 of 2026 does not delineate multiple types of Kapolri positions. The Kapolri serves as the top leader of the National Police and holds full responsibility for police operations.
Under the latest provisions, the role and authority of the Kapolri are specifically regulated in Article 9. The Kapolri is tasked with establishing, implementing, and controlling technical policing policies.
The Kapolri also leads the police force in carrying out operational activities, developing institutional capabilities, as well as planning, procuring, maintaining, and repairing specialized police equipment.
Thus, under the Police Law, the position of Kapolri encompasses two primary functions: serving as the leader of the National Police and acting as the primary authority directing technical policing policy.
Suyudi reaffirmed that the police force is positioned to provide protection and support national development efforts.
This role is fulfilled through public protection, security disruption prevention, the provision of legal certainty, and law enforcement against crimes within its jurisdiction.
Suyudi also stressed that police duties are not intended to take over the responsibilities of other ministries or institutions. The National Police will strictly fulfill the functions outlined by statutory provisions.
