Aceh – Indonesia, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Iran and the United States have exchanged new proposals to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Pezeshkian made the statement during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Turkmenistan on Thursday, October 8, 2026, on the sidelines of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) leaders’ summit and the Caspian Sea environmental summit.
Pezeshkian emphasized that Iran will not back down from negotiations with the US, even as the war continues.
“We are negotiating, but every time we talk with the US, they attack again. However, we will not leave the negotiating table and dialogue,” Pezeshkian said, as quoted by ISNA.
He mentioned that Tehran has submitted several proposals, while Washington has also presented new proposals during the negotiation process.
“We have revised these proposals. Once everything is finalized, we will sit down through existing mediators to bring them together,” he stated.
Pezeshkian noted that Tehran’s goal is to end the war while ensuring that the rights of the Iranian people are respected under international law.
During his meeting with Putin, Pezeshkian also expressed appreciation for Russia’s stance on regional issues and at the United Nations (UN), which he said has helped counter unilateralism.
He expressed hope that closer coordination between Tehran and Moscow would develop “rapidly and strongly,” calling the current situation an opportunity to deepen cooperation.
Meanwhile, Pezeshkian and Putin reviewed developments in bilateral relations and discussed strengthening cooperation in the energy, agriculture, transportation, and trade sectors.
Both leaders also stressed the need to accelerate the completion of various joint projects and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding comprehensive cooperation in line with both countries’ national interests and regional stability.
The meeting marked the first face-to-face encounter between Pezeshkian and Putin since September 1 on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
During that meeting, Putin described the Iran-US ceasefire as “unstable and far too fragile” and pledged that Russia would continue to support Tehran.
A day earlier, Pezeshkian and Putin had also spoken by phone regarding the Iran-US talks. Putin expressed Moscow’s readiness to support diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
Putin arrived in Turkmenistan on Thursday for a two-day visit to attend the CIS Summit and the Caspian Sea environmental summit in the Avaza National Tourist Zone on the Caspian coast.
The CIS Summit is scheduled to discuss cooperation among member states as well as regional and international developments.
Meanwhile, the Caspian Summit brings together leaders of the five coastal nations—Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan—with environmental cooperation in the Caspian Sea region being one of the main agenda items.***
