Aceh – Indonesia, The Bireuen Regency Government, through the Family Welfare Movement (TP-PKK), will hold the Suson Ranup Bungong Jeumpa Competition on Saturday, October 3, 2026. The traditional Acehnese betel leaf arranging competition is part of the events celebrating the 27th anniversary of Bireuen Regency.

Head of the Bireuen Regency Communication, Informatics, and Encryption Office (Kominsa), M. Zubair, stated that technical guidelines for the competition have been issued to guide participants and the committee.

“The art of arranging betel leaves, or suson ranup, is an intangible cultural heritage of the Acehnese people rich in philosophical values. This tradition symbolizes nobility, respect, and strong bonds of kinship,” Zubair said in Bireuen, Wednesday (9/30/2026).

According to him, the competition is not only part of Bireuen Regency’s anniversary celebration but also an effort to preserve tradition and foster the creativity of PKK members.

This year’s competition carries the theme “The Charm of Bungong Jeumpa in the Ranup Culture of the Land of Struggle”. The theme blends the beauty of bungong jeumpa as an Acehnese cultural identity with the historical values of Bireuen, famously known as the City of Struggle (Kota Juang).

Based on the technical guidelines, participants are given 150 minutes, or 2.5 hours, to complete the betel leaf arrangement. No additional time will be provided for late arrivals.

The entire creation process, from folding, weaving, cutting, to arranging the betel leaves, must be performed directly at the competition venue.

“The committee will only supply betel leaves as the primary material. Meanwhile, local wisdom containers or trays, complementary decorations, and supporting tools such as thread and needles must be prepared by each participant,” Zubair explained.
