Aceh – Indonesia, Muhammad Saini (40), a resident of Makmur Hamlet, Sungai Pauh Tunjong Village, West Langsa District, Langsa City, found an object suspected to be a mortar from the conflict era on the banks of the Krueng (River) Aceh, specifically in front of Chek Yukee Coffee Shop, Kampung Baru Village, Baiturrahman District, Banda Aceh, Wednesday (30/9/2026) evening.
Banda Aceh Police Chief Senior Commissioner Teguh Priyambodo Nugroho, through Baiturrahman Police Chief Police Commissioner Assistant Samandari, stated that the object was discovered at around 17:00 WIB while Muhammad Saini was searching for oysters or river clams.
“When he first found it, Muhammad Saini thought the object was just rusted iron. He then pulled it to the riverbank and cleaned it. After noticing its shape resembled a mortar, he reported the finding to the police,” Samandari said.
Officers from the Inafis Criminal Investigation Unit of the Banda Aceh Police and Baiturrahman Police personnel immediately secured the site, conducted a crime scene investigation, and set up a police line around the object.
Samandari noted that the object is believed to be an unexploded ordnance or mortar left over from the conflict period. However, he added that authorities have not yet confirmed whether the device is still active or inactive.
Sumandari mentioned that his team is coordinating with the Bomb Disposal Unit (Jibom) of the Aceh Regional Police Mobile Brigade to conduct further inspection and handling.
“The object is being treated as a dangerous item, and the discovery site remains secured until the Jibom team arrives for examination and evacuation,” he said.
As of Wednesday night, he said, the suspected mortar remained at the location under police cordon. He also urged residents not to approach, touch, move, or manipulate the object in any way.
“Report immediately to the police if you find any suspicious objects so they can be handled by personnel with specialized expertise and equipment,” he concluded.
